Mammatus 04 is a sculptural plaster work developed from mineral plasters, where a traditionally rigid material is stretched, folded, and fractured into dimensional form - pushing plaster to its physical and structural limits.
About the Series
Named after different storm cloud formations, this series highlights Varga’s persistent goal of learning, then defying, the limitations of plaster. Through the creation of his own tools and methods, Varga bypasses these limitations and pushes the material to unprecedented applications. Traditionally, fine plasters have been used on walls, burnished onto hard surfaces that are static and stand the test of time.
Aligning with his goal of reconceptualizing the possibilities of plaster, Varga’s new series pushes the material limits by stretching, folding, creasing, and sculpting this rigid material and creating pillow-like sculptures that combine various sheens and textures inlaid with desired cracks and folds.
