ARTIST PROFILE

As a young student in Hungary, Varga was sent to the principal’s office - reprimanded for drawing instead of paying attention in class. There, he was introduced to a master fresco painter who would become his mentor.

Varga worked in the traditional Roman fresco method across churches, theaters, and historic buildings throughout Europe, including projects within the Vatican.

Formally trained in carpentry and deeply interested in art and design from an early age - Varga was later accepted into a competitive program to study furniture design before shifting his focus to architecture. He received his Master’s in Architectural Design from the University of Sopron, where his experimentation and work with a variety of plasters began to take shape. His focus evolved to working with plaster as a structural and expressive medium capable of shaping spatial environments.

Today, Varga works between freestanding contemporary art and immersive architectural installations. Rooted in European craft lineage yet operating within a contemporary architectural framework, his practice collapses the boundary between object and environment. He continues to create freestanding work in his studio in Chagrin Falls, Ohio - and travels across the US and internationally to create site-specific architectural installations based on his fine art practice.
